  • 8 Slices bread (white or to taste)
  • 4 slices ham
  • 8 slices cheese (Gruyère, Emmental or to taste)
  • butter (to grease the bread with)
  • bolognaise sauce (leftover from the spaghetti)
  • 80 g cheese (grated)

Instructions

  • Heat the bolognaise sauce over a very low heat

Prepare the Croque Monsieur

  • Spread one side of 8 Slices bread with a layer of butter.
  • On an ungreased side of the bread, place a slice of ham and two slices of cheese.
  • Cover with a second slice of bread, buttered side out.

Bake

  • Heat a grill pan or croque-monsieur appliance over medium-high heat.
  • Place the croques in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until the cheese is melted and the bread is nice and golden brown and crispy.

  • Take a baking dish and place the croque monsieur in it. Pour over (but not excessively) the bolognaise sauce and top with grated cheese. Grill briefly in the oven until the cheese is melted and shows a crust.

Presentation

  • Serve immediately, possibly on a wooden board, along with a small portion of salad.
