Method

Get cooking

Prepare the Croque Monsieur

Spread a layer of butter on one side of 8 slices of bread.
On the unbuttered side of a slice, add one slice of ham and two slices of cheese.
Cover with a second slice of bread, buttered side facing out.

Cooking

Heat a griddle pan or sandwich toaster over a medium heat.
Cook the sandwiches for 3–4 minutes on each side, until the cheese has melted and the bread is golden and crisp.
Time range: choose the first timer to check progress or the last for the end of the stated time.
If you are making sandwiches for a crowd, place the cooked ones on a plate and keep them in an oven set to no more than 100°C while you cook the rest.

Serving

Cut each sandwich diagonally for a neat presentation.
Serve straight away, on a small wooden board if you like, with a little salad.
