Croque Madame

A delicious variation on the classic Croque Monsieur, topped off with a fried fried fried egg.

  • 8 Slices bread (white or to taste)
  • 4 slices ham
  • 8 slices cheese (Gruyère, Emmental or to taste)
  • butter (to grease the bread with)
  • 4 eggs

Instructions

Prepare the Croque Madame

  • Spread one side of 8 Slices bread with a layer of butter.
  • On an ungreased side of the bread, place a slice of ham and two slices of cheese.
  • Cover with a second slice of bread, buttered side out.

Bake

  • Heat a grill pan or croque-monsieur appliance over medium-high heat.
  • Place the croques in the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until the cheese is melted and the bread is nice and golden brown and crispy.
  • Are you baking for a big gang? Then put the baked croques on a plate and put them in an oven of max 100°C. That way you can bake several times before going to the table.

Fry the eggs

  • Meanwhile, fry the eggs in a pan with a little butter. Make sure the yolks remain whole.

Presentation

  • Top each Croque Monsieur with a fried egg to make a Croque Madame.
  • Serve immediately, possibly on a wooden board, along with a small portion of salad.
